Service Stall Test (Normal & High Humidity Conditions)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Saturn LW300, 2002 Saturn LW200, 2002 Saturn L300, 2002 Saturn L200, and 2002 Saturn L100. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: This test must be performed in a service stall environment that protects the vehicle from wind that could cause incorrect pressure or temperature.
NOTE: If the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) is too high or the A/C high side pressure is too high, the (PCM on 2.2L) or (ECM on 3.0L) will override the fan control request and the cooling fans will be commanded on high.
  1. Open hood and leave open during entire test.
  2. Install a manifold gage set to high and low side service ports.
  3. Start engine and turn A/C to OFF position - A/C button indicator light is off.
  4. Depress recirculation button so that indicator light is illuminated.
  5. Install thermometer into right center outlet.
  6. Set mode knob to I/P VENT position - full counter-clockwise.
  7. Set temperature knob to full cold position - full counter-clockwise.
  8. Set blower to third speed - M2.
  9. Open both front doors and windows to stabilize interior air temperature with outside ambient temperature.
  10. Start engine and allow Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) to reach 188°F (86°C).
    • For 2.2L models, using a scan tool, perform HVAC PERFORMANCE test using an engine speed of 2000 RPM. This test will command the A/C relay ON, turn the cooling fans on MEDIUM speed and hold the engine speed to 2000 RPM.
    • For 3.0L models turn A/C ON, using the console button. Using scan tool, command FAN CONTROL 2 ON, which will run both cooling fans at medium speed. Using accelerator pedal, increase engine speed to 2000 RPM and hold.
  11. Record A/C system pressures and outlet temperature every minute for 5 minutes.
  12. Exit out of the scan tool test and return engine to idle.
  13. Release scan tool control of engine cooling fans.
  14. Compare readings to appropriate specification table. See A/C SYSTEM PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATIONS  .
