Removal & Installation: CLOCKSPRING: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lincoln Town Car. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If installing NEW clockspring, remove locking mechanism pull ring. If installing existing clockspring, remove tape applied during removal procedure. If clockspring rotor has moved or if unsure of clockspring rotor position, center clockspring. See CLOCKSPRING CENTERING  under ADJUSTMENTS. Maintain clockspring centered position.
NOTE: Slight turning of clockspring is allowable during installation to properly align clockspring to steering column.
  2. To install, reverse removal procedure. DO NOT install driver-side air bag at this time. Tighten fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Install 2 Air Bag Simulators (418-F395) to upper clockspring connectors. Connect negative battery cable. With air bag simulators installed at all remaining deployable devices, perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK  . Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute for back-up power supply to deplete stored energy.
  3. Install driver-side air bag module. Activate air bag system. See ACTIVATING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
