Removal and Installation

NOTE: All steering column components are assembled with specific fasteners. They are designed with a thread-locking system to prevent loosening due to vibrations associated with normal vehicle operation.

ALL VEHICLES 

  1. Make sure the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
  2. Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS). For additional information, refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .
  3. Pull to release the retaining clips and remove the steering column opening lower finish panel.

  4. Remove the steering column opening lower finish panel reinforcement.
    1. Release the pin-type retainers and remove the electrical connector.
    2. Remove the screw and data link connector.
    3. Remove the bolts.
    4. Remove the steering column opening lower finish panel reinforcement.

  5. Disconnect the clockspring electrical connectors at the base of the steering column.

  6. Remove the ignition switch lock cylinder.
    1. Insert the ignition key into the ignition switch lock cylinder and turn to the RUN position.
    2. Insert a punch through the hole in the lower steering column shroud and push the ignition switch lock cylinder release tab while pulling out the ignition switch lock cylinder.

  7. NOTE: The steering wheel is remove for clarity.

  8. If equipped, twist the tilt wheel handle and shank and remove.
  9. Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds.
    1. Remove the screws.
    2. Remove the lower steering column shroud.
    3. Remove the upper steering column shroud.

  10. Disconnect the multifunction switch electrical connectors.

  11. Reinstall the ignition lock cylinder and remove the key.

    COMMERCIAL CHASSIS 

  12. Remove the nuts.

  13. Remove the nuts and the steering column support.

    ALL VEHICLES 

  14. Remove the screw and detach the transmission range indicator from the column.

  15. Disconnect the transmission shift cable loop from the shift tube hook.

    COMMERCIAL CHASSIS 

  16. CAUTION: Do not allow the steering wheel to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected from the steering column or damage to the clockspring can occur. If there is evidence that the steering wheel has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .

  17. Remove the pinch bolt and detach the intermediate shaft from the steering column.

    ALL EXCEPT COMMERCIAL CHASSIS 

  18. CAUTION: Do not allow the steering wheel to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected from the steering column or damage to the clockspring can occur. If there is evidence that the steering wheel has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered. For additional information, refer to AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS .

  19. Remove the pinch bolt and detach the intermediate shaft from the steering column.

    ALL VEHICLES 

  20. Disconnect the shift cable from the selector lever pivot arm.
  21. Remove the shift cable from the steering column lower mounting bracket by pushing the tab on the cable in and sliding the cable off the bracket.
  22. Disconnect the ignition switch.
  23. Lower the steering column bend bracket and disconnect the plastic electrical connectors.

    COMMERCIAL CHASSIS 

  24. While supporting the steering column, remove the retaining nuts and remove the steering column.

    ALL EXCEPT COMMERCIAL CHASSIS 

  25. While supporting the steering column, remove the retaining nuts and remove the steering column.

  26. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
