Front Impact Crash Sensor

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Ford Windstar. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Front impact crash sensor is located on upper radiator support next to hood latch. Front impact crash sensor reacts to impacts according to direction and force. It discriminates between an impact that requires air bag deployment and an impact that does not.

When an impact occurs requiring air bag deployment, impact sensor contacts close, completing electrical circuit necessary for system operation. At least 2 sensors, safing sensor and front impact crash sensor, must be activated simultaneously to deploy air bags. Safing sensor is integral with Restraints Control Module (RCM).
