Test J: No Communication With Generic Electronic Module
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) 20-pin harness connector C2100a (late production) or 18-pin harness connector C201b (early production). GEM is located behind center of instrument panel. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. On late production models, measure voltage between ground and GEM harness connector C2100a terminal No. 1 (White/Yellow wire). See Fig 1
. On early production models, measure voltage between ground and GEM harness connector C201b terminal No. 11 (White/Yellow wire). See Figure
. On all models, if voltage is 10 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in White/Yellow wire.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. On late production models, measure resistance between ground and GEM harness connector C2100a terminal No. 2 (Black/White wire). On early production models, measure resistance between ground and GEM harness connector C201b terminal No. 18 (Black wire). On all models, if resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair module communications concern. See MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - EXPLORER SPORT & EXPLORER SPORT TRAC. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black/White wire or Black wire.
