Transmission Cooler Flow Test

NOTE: Before performing TRANSMISSION COOLER FLOW TEST, ensure shift cables and linkages are properly adjusted. Ensure fluid level is correct and line pressures are within specifications. See HYDRAULIC PRESSURE TESTS  under PERFORMANCE TESTS.
  1. Remove dipstick from fluid filler tube. Place funnel in fluid filler tube. Raise and support vehicle. Remove cooler return line from fitting on transmission case. Connect one end of a hose to the cooler return line and the other to a point where it can be inserted into the funnel at fluid filler tube. Lower vehicle. Insert end of hose into funnel.
  2. Place selector lever in "N" position. Start engine and run at idle. Once a steady flow of fluid (without air bubbles) is observed, remove hose end from funnel and place into measuring container. After 15 seconds, place hose end back into funnel and turn engine off. Measure amount of fluid in measuring container. There should be about 8 ozs. (.24L) of fluid in measuring container.
  3. If fluid amount is okay, testing is complete. If fluid amount is not okay, disconnect hose from cooler return line and connect it to converter outlet fitting on transmission case. Repeat step  2 . Fluid flow should be about 1.0 qt. (.9L) in 30 seconds. If flow is okay, flush transmission cooler lines and cooler. If flow is not okay, check transmission fluid filter, pump assembly, valve body and/or converter.
