Direct-Reverse Clutch: Reassembly
- Ensure direct-reverse clutch drum check ball is free in cage. Install inner and outer piston seals. Ensure lip seals face bottom of cylinder. See Fig 1 . Apply transmission fluid to direct-reverse clutch piston lip seals and install into intermediate brake drum. Install piston return springs and spring retainer. Compress springs and install retainer snap ring.
- Remove spring compressor. Install 5 steel plates and 5 friction plates in alternating order, starting with steel plate. See Fig 1 . Install pressure plate and clutch pack snap ring. While pushing down on clutch pack, use a feeler gauge to check clearance between snap ring and pressure plate. See Figure .
- If clearance is not .051-.079" (1.30-2.01 mm), install correct selective snap ring. Snap rings are available in the following thicknesses: .054" (1.37 mm), .068" (1.73 mm), .082" (2.08 mm) and .096" (2.44 mm). Once correct snap ring is installed, recheck clearance. Apply air pressure to hole on back side of clutch drum. Block opposite hole with finger. Piston must apply under pressure and release when air is removed. Set direct-reverse clutch aside for transmission reassembly.
NOTE:
Direct-reverse clutch friction and steel plates are directional. Friction plates must be installed with grooves angled clockwise (I.D. to O.D.). Steel plates must be installed with grooves angled counterclockwise (I.D. to O.D.).
