Test L: Rear Wiper Does Not Operate Properly
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2000 Mercury Mountaineer, 2000 Ford Explorer, 1999 Mercury Mountaineer, and 1999 Ford Explorer. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
After all repairs, clear Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) and retest system.
- Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument panel. Retrieve and note continuous DTCs stored in Generic Electronic Module/Central Timer Module (GEM/CTM). Clear continuous DTCs. Following NGS tester manufacturer's instructions, perform wiper/washer self-test and rear wiper self-test. Note all DTCs. If DTCs are retrieved, go to appropriate test step. See TEST L DTC INDEX
table. If no DTCs are retrieved, go to next step.TEST L DTC INDEX
DTC Go To Step B1342 (1) B1611 2 B1614 2 B1839 6 B1894 6 (1) Replace GEM/CTM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE/CENTRAL TIMER MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Clear DTCs and retest system. - Observe PID R_WP_MD while turning rear wiper switch through all positions. If PID values agree with switch positions, go to step 6 . If PID values do not agree with switch positions, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect rear wiper switch connector. Measure resistance between rear wiper switch terminals No. 2 and 5 (component side) while moving rear wiper switch through all positions. See Figure
. See REAR WIPER SWITCH RESISTANCE TEST
table. If resistances are as specified, go to next step. If resistances are not as specified, replace rear wiper switch.REAR WIPER SWITCH RESISTANCE TEST
Switch Position Ohms Off 4200-9100 First Interval Delay 1000-2420 Second Interval Delay 220-950 High 50-230 - Disconnect GEM 16-pin connector C281. Measure resistance between ground and rear wiper switch connector terminal No. 2 (Pink/Black wire). See Figure . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Pink/Black wire.
- Measure resistance of Gray/Red wire between rear wiper/washer switch connector terminal No. 5 and GEM/CTM connector C280 terminal No. 21. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Gray/Red wire. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace GEM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE/CENTRAL TIMER MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Observe PID R_WP_PK. Move wiper arm to center of liftgate glass by triggering active commands REAR WIPER UP RELAY and REAR WIPER DOWN RELAY ON and OFF. GEM PID R_WP_PK should indicate PARKED when wiper arm is parked, and indicate notPARKED when arm is in center of glass. If PID value is as specified, replace rear wiper motor. See REAR WIPER MOTOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If PID value is not as specified, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect rear wiper motor connector and GEM 16-pin connector C281. Measure resistance of Violet/Yellow wire between GEM connector C281 terminal No. 4 and rear wiper motor connector terminal No. 3. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Violet/Yellow wire.
- Measure resistance between ground and GEM connector C281 terminal No. 4 (Violet/Yellow wire). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Violet/Yellow wire.
- Measure resistance between ground and rear wiper motor connector terminal No. 4 (Black wire). See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire.
- Place wiper arm in PARKED position. Measure resistance between rear wiper motor terminals No. 3 and 4 (component side). See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace rear wiper motor. See REAR WIPER MOTOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Place wiper arm in middle of glass. Measure resistance between rear wiper motor terminals No. 3 and 4 (component side). See Figure . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace GEM. See GENERIC ELECTRONIC MODULE/CENTRAL TIMER MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, replace rear wiper motor. See REAR WIPER MOTOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
