Test F: Power Lumbar Inoperative
CAUTION:
Side air bag system must be deactivated for diagnosis of power seat (if equipped). See
AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS - EXPLORER & MOUNTAINEER article. Air Bag Simulator (418-F088) must be installed under seats to floor connector, and removed before operating vehicle.
- Deactivate air bag system. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS - EXPLORER & MOUNTAINEER article. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Operate lumbar switch to inflate position. If adjusting pump does not operate, go to next step. If adjusting pump operates, go to step 7 .
- Operate power seat. If power seat operates, go to next step. If power seat does not operate and vehicle is not equipped with memory seats, perform TEST A: POWER SEAT INOPERATIVE , or if suspect seat is equipped with driver memory seat, perform TEST G: MEMORY SEAT INOPERATIVE .
- Disconnect lumbar switch Gray 2-pin harness connector. Measure voltage between ground and lumbar switch harness connector Black/White wire terminal (Red/Light Blue wire terminal if equipped with memory seats). If more than 10 volts exist, go to next step. If 10 volts or less exist, repair open in appropriate wire. Recheck system operation.
- Remove lumbar switch. Measure resistance between lumbar switch terminals. Resistance should be less than 5 ohms with switch in inflate position, and more than 10 k/ohms with switch in any other position. If resistance is as specified, reconnect lumbar switch connector and go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace lumbar switch. Recheck system operation.
- Disconnect adjusting pump 2-pin harness connector. Measure voltage between ground and adjusting pump harness connector Red wire terminal. Press lumbar switch to inflate position. If more than 10 volts exist, go to next step. If 10 volts or less exist, repair open in Red wire. Recheck system operation.
- Measure resistance between ground and adjusting pump harness connector Black wire terminal. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace adjusting pump. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open or high resistance in Black wire. Recheck system operation.
- Activate lumbar switch to inflate position. Observe seatback pad. If seatback does not inflate, go to next step. If seatback inflates, go to step 13 .
- Gain access to suspect support bladder. See SEAT BACK ASSEMBLY (DISASSEMBLY) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Visually inspect support bladder. If no damage is visible, go to next step. If any damage is visible, repair or replace support bladder. Recheck system operation.
- Remove support bladder hose from adjusting pump. Activate lumbar switch to inflate position. If air is felt coming from adjusting pump, go to next step. If no air is felt coming from adjusting pump, replace adjusting pump. Recheck system operation.
- Connect support bladder hose to adjusting pump. Disconnect hose coming from adjusting pump from lumbar switch. Activate lumbar switch to inflate position. If air is felt at open hose, go to next step. If no air is felt at open hose, replace hose. Recheck system operation.
- Connect hose to lumbar switch. Disconnect hose going to support bladder from lumbar switch. Activate lumbar switch to inflate position. If air is felt at lumbar switch port, go to next step. If no air is felt at lumbar switch port, replace lumbar switch. Recheck system operation
- Connect hose to lumbar switch. Disconnect hose from support bladder. Activate lumbar switch to inflate position. If air is felt at hose, go to next step. If no air is felt at hose, replace hose. Recheck system operation.
- Connect hose at support bladder. Disconnect hose from adjusting pump. Connect hand pump to disconnected hose. Pressurize system to 5 psi (0.35 kg/cm2 ). Wait 3 hours. Observe pressure. If pressure does not hold, go to next step. If pressure holds, system is okay at this time.
- Disconnect hose from lumbar support bladder. Using hand pump, inflate pad to 5 psi (0.35 kg/cm2 ). Wait 3 hours. Observe pressure. If pressure does not hold, replace lumbar support bladder. If pressure holds, replace lumbar switch. Recheck system operation.
NOTE:
Adjusting pump may also be referred to as power lumbar motor.
