Description & Operation

NOTE: This article applies only to 4-door Explorer and Mountaineer models. For Explorer Sport and Explorer Sport Trac testing procedures, see POWER DOOR LOCKS & REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEMS - EXPLORER SPORT & EXPLORER SPORT TRAC article.

Power door lock system consists of power door lock/unlock switches, driver door unlock, door lock and door unlock relays, door lock actuators and necessary wiring. A Remote Anti-Theft Personality (RAP) module is used to control all door lock/unlock functions. RAP may also control other body or engine electronic operations. On all models, door lock/unlock switches are located in front door armrests or door trim panels.

To lock all doors, press any power door lock/unlock switch to LOCK position. To unlock all doors, press switch to UNLOCK position. Side and rear auxiliary doors are also controlled by power locks, and may also be manually operated. Exterior key locks will only lock/unlock an individual door. On models with optional remote keyless entry systems, exterior key locks may operate other door locks.
