Contact Assembly (CLOCKSPRING): Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect positive battery cable. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM  . Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Mark steering shaft at 12 o'clock position for installation reference. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD  .
  2. Place steering column in full down position. Remove instrument cluster trim panel. Remove instrument panel steering column cover and reinforcement. Remove lower shroud. See Figure . Remove ignition switch lock cylinder. See LOCK CYLINDER (FUNCTIONAL)  or LOCK CYLINDER (NON-FUNCTIONAL)  . Remove ignition key warning switch terminal and wire. Remove upper steering column shroud. Remove Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) transmitter.
  3. Disconnect clockspring electrical connector from column harness. If contact assembly is to be reused, tape contact assembly to prevent rotation. If contact assembly is rotated, clockspring could be damaged internally. See Figure . Disconnect electrical connectors. Detach wiring connectors. Remove 3 screws and remove contact assembly.
