Coil Spring: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1999 Ford Mustang and 1998 Ford Mustang. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Position spring insulator on top of spring. Position spring into lower control arm spring pocket. Ensure spring end is positioned between 2 holes in lower arm spring pocket. See Fig 1 .
  2. Position spring into upper spring seat in crossmember. Insert compression rod through control arm and spring. Hook compression rod to upper plate. Ensure upper plate is installed with hooks facing center of vehicle. On 4.6L engine, install upper plate between coils in locations marked during removal. DO NOT nick spring coils when removing upper plate.
  3. On all models, install retaining spring compressor components. Tighten forcing nut. Position lower control arm into crossmember. Install NEW control arm pivot bolts and nuts finger tight. DO NOT tighten bolts and nuts at this time. Remove spring compressor.
  4. Using a jack, raise control arm to normal riding height. Tighten control arm pivot bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Remove jack. Install tie rod end into spindle. Install NEW cotter pin. Install brake caliper and wheel. Lower vehicle.

  1. Position spring insulator on top of spring. Position spring into lower control arm spring pocket. Ensure spring end is positioned between 2 holes in lower arm spring pocket. See Figure .
  2. Position spring into upper spring seat in crossmember. Install NEW control arm pivot bolts and nuts finger tight. DO NOT tighten bolts and nuts at this time. Remove spring compressor.
  3. Using a jack, raise control arm until shock absorber is compressed to previously established alignment mark (normal riding height). Tighten control arm pivot bolts and nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Remove jack. Install tie rod end into spindle. Install NEW cotter pin. Install brake caliper and wheel. Lower vehicle.
