Test E: Warning Indicator Flickers Or Operates Intermittently
- Inspect generator and regulator grounds (mounting surfaces and fasteners). Inspect battery ground. Repair as necessary and retest system operation. If all grounds are okay, go to next step.
- Start engine. With engine running, inspect central junction box fuse No. 14 (5-amp) by wiggling connection and noting warning indicator. If warning indicator flickers, repair loose connection as necessary. Retest system operation. If warning indicator does not flicker, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Connect a fused (15-amp) jumper wire between positive battery terminal and generator terminal "A", by backprobing connector. Start and run engine, while observing warning indicator. If warning indicator flickers, go to next step. If warning indicator does not flicker, repair loose connections in Orange/Light Blue wire between generator and Brown fusible link "C". See WIRING DIAGRAMS
.
- Turn ignition off. Remove generator from vehicle. See GENERATOR
under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between voltage regulator terminals "A" and "F". If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace generator. Retest system operation. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Disconnect generator 3-pin and 1-pin connectors. Remove voltage regulator and brush holder. See VOLTAGE REGULATOR
under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between each generator slip ring and ground. See Fig 1
. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms between both slip rings and ground, replace generator. See GENERATOR
under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance between one or both slip rings and ground is less than 10 k/ohms, replace voltage regulator.
