Test A: Warning Indicator Is On With Engine Running, System Is Not Charging

  1. Turn ignition off. Remove and inspect battery junction box fuse No. 23 (60-amp). Replace fuse as necessary. If fuse is okay, go to next step.
  2. Measure voltage at generator terminal B+. See Fig 1 . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in Black/Orange wire between generator and battery junction box. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  3. Disconnect generator 3-pin electrical connector. Measure voltage of Orange/Light Blue wire at generator connector terminal "A". See Fig 2 . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in Orange/Light Blue wire between generator and Brown fusible link "C". See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  4. Connect generator 3-pin connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage of Light Green/Red wire at generator connector terminal "I", by backprobing generator connector. See Fig 2 . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in Light Green/Red wire between generator connector and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  5. Start engine. Measure voltage between generator B+ terminal (component side) and positive battery terminal. With engine running, turn headlights and rear defogger on, and turn blower motor to high speed. If voltage drop is less than .5 volts, go to next step. If voltage drop is greater than .5 volts, repair high resistance in Black/Orange wire between generator and battery junction box. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  6. Turn ignition off. Remove generator from vehicle. See GENERATOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between voltage regulator terminals "A" and "F". See Fig 3 . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace generator. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, replace voltage regulator. See VOLTAGE REGULATOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation.
