Section 6 (Suspension - Front): Description

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1999 Mercury Mystique, 1999 Mercury Cougar, 1999 Ford Contour, 1998 Mercury Mystique, and 1998 Ford Contour. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Front suspension is MacPherson strut type, using gas pressurized struts and cast steering knuckles. Strut assembly is bolted to top of strut tower. Lower end of strut fits into a pinch joint, designed into the steering knuckle. A stamped steel control arm attaches to subframe and steering knuckle at lower ball joint. A link assembly runs between the strut and stabilizer bar end. See Fig 1. Installation of new front strut assemblies and/or springs in pairs is not required by manufacturer. Install front suspension assemblies and/or springs one at a time as required.
