Torque Converter Cleaning And Inspection

  1. If the torque converter is not going to be replaced, flush the torque converter. Refer to TORQUE CONVERTER FLUSHING .
  2. If the torque converter is being replaced, partially fill the converter with Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON® and hand agitate. Drain the converter and then refill for installation.
  3. Flush all transaxle fluid coolers and tubes. Refer to TRANSMISSION FLUID COOLER - BACKFLUSHING AND CLEANING .
  4. All cooler bypass valves (CBV), if equipped, must be cleaned.
  5. Check the fluid cooler flow. Refer to PRELIMINARY INSPECTION . If the transaxle cooling system fails the test, install a new fluid cooler, cooler bypass valve, and/or the cooler lines. Refer to TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION COOLING
