Steering Column: Disassembly

  1. Remove the steering column. See STEERING COLUMN  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. Remove the overdrive on/off wiring harness from the plastic harness retainer. See Fig 1.
  3. Unclip the steering column opening gearshift lever seal from the steering column. See Fig 2.
  4. Remove the gearshift lever retaining pin and remove the gearshift lever assembly. See Fig 3.

  5. CAUTION: Carefully note the position of the steering column lock gear, bearing and retainer prior to removal.
  6. Remove the snap ring. See Fig 4.
  7. Remove the steering column lock housing bearing. See Fig 4.
  8. Remove the steering column lock gear. See Fig 5.
  9. On a fixed steering column, remove the snap ring from the bottom of the steering column shaft. See Fig 6.
  10. On a tilt steering column, remove the sensor ring. Remove the steering column lower bearing spring. Remove the sensor ring. See Fig 7.

  11. Remove the steering column bearing tolerance ring from the steering column shaft. See Fig 8.
  12. Remove the two lock cylinder housing pivot screws. See Fig 9.
  13. WARNING: The steering column position spring is under tension and can come out with great force.
  14. Remove the steering column lock cylinder housing and the steering column shaft from the steering actuator housing. Pry up on the steering column locking levers using a shop fabricated tool. On tilt steering columns, remove the steering column position spring. See Fig 10.
  15. Using a flat-blade screw driver pry up on the flush surface of the turn indicator cancel cam and remove. See Fig 11.

  16. Remove the snap ring. See Fig 12
  17. Remove the steering column upper bearing spring. See Fig 12.
  18. Remove the steering column bearing sleeve. See Fig 13.
  19. Slide the steering column shaft in toward the steering column lock cylinder housing. Slide the steering column bearing tolerance ring off the steering column shaft and remove the shaft. See Fig 14.
  20. Using a suitable punch, remove the steering column upper bearing from the steering column lock cylinder housing. See Fig 15.

  21. On a tilt steering column, use a suitable punch to remove the steering column lower bearing from the steering column lock cylinder housing. See Fig 16.
  22. Remove the two screws and remove the plastic harness retainer. See Fig 17.
  23. Remove the three bolts. Remove the brake shift interlock solenoid and the transmission shift position insert. See Fig 17.
  24. Remove the four shift tube bolts. Remove the two shift tube clamps. Remove the shift tube. See Fig 19.

  25. Remove the transmission shift arm assembly. Remove the two bolts. Remove the transmission shift arm assembly. See Fig 20.
  26. Remove the spring. See Fig 21.
  27. Drive out the gearshift lever pin from the shift tube. See Fig 22.

  28. Remove the gearshift lever. See Fig 23.
  29. Remove the column shift selector lever plunger. If it is bent, replace the column shift selector lever plunger. See Fig 24.
  30. Remove the two gearshift lever socket bushings and the transmission control selector lever spring clip. See Fig 25.

  31. Remove the steering column lock pawl. Drive out the steering column lock lever pin. Remove the steering column lock pawl. See Fig 26.

  32. Remove the ignition switch screws. Remove the ignition switch. See Fig 27.
  33. Remove the steering column lower bearing and sleeve. See Fig 28.
  34. Remove the steering column lower bearing retainer bolts. Remove the steering column lower bearing retainer. See Fig 29.
  35. Remove the steering column upper and lower lock actuator. See Fig 30.
