Test B: Auto Dimming Feature Malfunctioning

NOTE: Preform inside mirror self-test before proceeding with this procedure. See INSIDE MIRROR SELF-TEST  under COMPONENT TESTING.
  1. Ensure transmission is in Park. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Cover light sensor on back of inside mirror. Using a flashlight, shine light into light sensor on front of inside mirror. If mirror does not darken, go to next step. If mirror darkens, system is okay at this time.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect inside mirror harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between terminals No. 6 (Red/Yellow wire) and No. 4 (Black wire) at inside mirror harness connector. See Fig 1 . If battery voltage exists, go to step  6 . If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
  3. Measure voltage at terminal No. 6 (Red/Yellow wire) at inside mirror harness connector. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, repair open in Black wire.
  4. Remove fuse No. 11 (7.5-amp) from instrument panel fuse box. If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is blown, repair short to ground in Red/Yellow wire or power distribution circuit. See appropriate wiring diagram in POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  5. Measure voltage at input side of fuse No. 11. If battery voltage exists, repair open in Red/Yellow wire. If battery voltage does not exist, repair power distribution. See appropriate wiring diagram in POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  6. Ensure ignition switch is in RUN position. Measure voltage at terminal No. 3 (Black/Pink wire) at inside mirror harness connector. Battery voltage should exists only when transmission is in Reverse. If battery voltage only exists when transmission is in Reverse, replace inside mirror assembly. If battery voltage exists in any other gear or does not exists when transmission is in Reverse, repair back-up light system as necessary. See appropriate wiring diagrams in BACK-UP LIGHTS article.
