Test B: Power Seat Completely Inoperative

  1. Test Power Supply & Ground  - Remove seat control switch. Using voltmeter, check voltage between Red (Black/White wire on Cougar/Thunderbird) and Black wire of seat control switch harness connector. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, go to step 5).
  2. Test System Ground  - Using ohmmeter, check resistance in Black wire between seat control switch harness connector and ground. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black wire.
  3. Test Power Supply  - Remove fuse No. 6 (30-amp) in power distribution box in engine compartment. Check resistance in Red wire (Black/White wire on Cougar/Thunderbird) between output side of fuse and ground. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10,000 ohms, repair short in Red wire (Black/White wire on Cougar/Thunderbird).
  4. Test Circuit Continuity  - Check resistance in Red wire (Black/White wire on Cougar/Thunderbird) between seat control switch harness connector and output side of fuse. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace fuse and go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Red wire (Black/White wire on Cougar/Thunderbird).
  5. Test Switch Operation  - Using jumper wires, connect one jumper wire to Red wire (Black/White on Cougar/Thunderbird) at power seat control switch harness connector. Connect other jumper wire to ground. Connect other ends of jumper wires to other terminals of seat control switch harness connector. See SABLE/TAURUS/COUGAR/THUNDERBIRD SEAT MOTOR OPERATION  table. Observe motor operation. If motor does not operate as specified, go to next step. If motor operates correctly, replace seat control switch.
    SABLE/TAURUS/COUGAR/THUNDERBIRD SEAT MOTOR OPERATION

Red Wire (+) Black Wire (-) Seat Function
Yellow/Light Green Red/Light Green Rear Downward
Yellow/Light Blue Red/Light Blue Front Downward
Red/Light Green Yellow/Light Green Rear Upward
Red/Light Blue Yellow/Light Blue Front Upward
    Yellow/White Red/White Rearward
    Red/White Yellow/White Forward
  6. Test Wiring For Short  - Using ohmmeter, check resistance in wires described in SABLE/TAURUS/COUGAR/THUNDERBIRD SEAT MOTOR OPERATION  table between seat control switch harness connector and ground. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or less, repair short in appropriate wire(s).
  7. Test Wiring For Open  - Using an ohmmeter, check resistance in wires described in SABLE/TAURUS/COUGAR/THUNDERBIRD SEAT MOTOR OPERATION  table between seat control switch harness connector and seat motor harness connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or less in all wires, system okay at this time. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms in any wire(s), repair open in appropriate wire(s).
