Steering Column: Disassembly

  1. Remove the air bag sliding contact, See AIR BAG - SLIDING CONTACT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  2. Remove the steering column, See STEERING COLUMN  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  3. Remove the bearing retainer. See Figure .
  4. Remove the steering column lock housing bearing. See Figure .
  5. Remove the steering column lock gear. See Figure .
  6. Disconnect the electrical connector, and remove the screws. Remove the shock absorber electronic steering sensor. See Figure .
  7. Remove the steering column upper bearing spring, and the sensor ring. See Figure .
  8. Remove the steering column bearing tolerance ring from the steering column shaft. See Figure .
  9. Remove the lock cylinder housing screws. See Figure .
  10. WARNING: The steering column position spring is under tension and may come out with great force.
  11. Pry up on the steering column locking levers using shop fabricated tool. Remove the steering column position spring. Remove the steering column lock cylinder housing and the steering column shaft from the steering actuator housing. See Figure .
  12. Remove the bearing retainer snap ring. See Figure .
  13. Remove the steering column bearing spring. See Figure .
  14. Remove the steering column bearing sleeve. See Figure .
  15. Slide the steering column shaft toward the steering column lock cylinder housing, then out. Remove the steering column bearing tolerance ring by sliding it off the steering column shaft. See Figure .
  16. Remove the steering column bearing from the steering column lock cylinder housing. See Figure .
  17. Remove the bolts, and the brake shift interlock solenoid. See Figure .
  18. Remove the bolts, clamps, and shift tube. See Figure .
  19. Remove the bolts, then the transmission selector lever arm and support. See Figure .
  20. Remove the transmission control selector lever plunger spring. See Figure .
  21. Drive out the gearshift lever pin from the shift tube. See Figure .
  22. Remove the gearshift lever. See Figure .
  23. Remove the column shift selector lever plunger. If bent, replace the column shift selector lever plunger. See Figure .
  24. Remove the gearshift lever socket bushings and the transmission control selector lever spring clip. See Figure .
  25. Remove the bolts and the ignition switch. See Figure .
  26. Remove the lower steering column bearing. See Figure .
  27. Remove the three bolts, and the steering column lower bearing retainer. See Figure .
  28. Drive put the steering column lock lever pin and remove the steering column lock pawl. See Figure .
  29. Remove the upper steering column lock actuator and the lower steering column lock actuator. See Figure .
