Power Steering System Flushing
WARNING:
Do not mix oil types. Any mixture or any unapproved oil can lead to seal deterioration and leaks. A leak can ultimately cause loss of fluid, which can result in a loss of power steering assist.
- Remove the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relay to disable the vehicle. See Figure .
- Remove the power steering reservoir from the reservoir bracket. See Fig 1 .
- Remove the power steering reservoir bracket.
- Disconnect the power steering return hose from the power steering reservoir. Compress and move the hose clamp. Disconnect the power steering return hose and plug the fitting to the reservoir.
- Attach an extension hose between the power steering return hose and an empty container.
- Fill the power steering pump reservoir. Use WSA-M2C195-A or MERCON M931264 EC type fluid.
- Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock while cranking the engine until fluid exiting the extension hose is clear.
- Disconnect the extension hose from the power steering return hose and attach the power steering return hose to the power steering pump reservoir.
- Install the power steering reservoir bracket.
- Install the power steering pump reservoir to the bracket.
- Fill the power steering pump reservoir. Use WSA-M2C195-A or MERCON M931264 EC type fluid.
- Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock.
- Install the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relay. See Figure .
NOTE:
The starter should not be operated for more than 10-15 seconds at a time.
CAUTION:
Do not overfill the power steering oil reservoir.
CAUTION:
Do not hold the steering wheel against the stops for an extended period of time. Damage to the pump can occur.
