Anti-Lock Brake System: Description

CAUTION: See ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section.
NOTE: For more information on brake system, see BRAKE SYSTEM article in the BRAKES section.

The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) allows the driver to stop in the shortest distance while maintaining steering control. System consists of a master cylinder/booster assembly, Anti-Lock Brake Control Module (ABCM), Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU), electric pump/motor, brake pressure control valve, 4 wheel sensors, and ANTI-LOCK and BRAKE warning lights. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 .

Some vehicles are equipped with optional Traction Assist (TA). TA works with the ABS to control rear wheel spin when vehicle is accelerated on slippery or loose surfaces.
