Steering Wheel: Notes

WARNING: Deactivate air bag system before performing any service operation involving steering column components. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT system article in RESTRAINTS. DO NOT apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy.
CAUTION: When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory system may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.
  1. Center front wheels to the straight-ahead position.
  2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
  3. Pry out two steering wheel spoke covers covering air bag module screws on sides of steering wheel. See Figure .
  4. Remove two air bag module retaining screws on side of steering wheel from driver side air bag module and lift driver side air bag module away from steering wheel. See Figure .
  5. Disconnect air bag wire harness connector, horn control wire harness connector, and, if equipped, speed control harness connector. See Figure .
  6. CAUTION: Be sure both air bag sliding contact assembly wire harnesses do not get caught on steering wheel when lifting steering wheel off of steering shaft to prevent damage. See Figure .
  7. Remove steering wheel retaining bolt. DISCARD retaining bolt.
  8. Install Steering Wheel Puller (T67L-3600-A) and remove steering wheel. Route contact assembly wire harness through steering wheel as steering wheel is lifted off steering shaft.
  9. CAUTION: Be sure air bag sliding contact internal service lock is engaged. Air bag sliding contact should not be turned more than 45 degrees to the right or left to prevent damage.
  10. Rotate air bag sliding contact to the right or left to engage service lock.
