Coolant Level Indicator Never/Always On

  1. When the engine is cold, observe engine coolant level in the radiator coolant recovery reservoir. Is engine coolant level below FULL COLD mark? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  3 .
  2. Fill coolant to the FULL COLD mark on the radiator coolant recovery reservoir. Start vehicle and observe engine coolant level indicator. Does engine coolant level indicator illuminate then stay off (after 3 second movement)? If yes, system is okay. If no, go to next step.
  3. Does indicator turn on and remain on? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  5 .
  4. Disconnect connector at radiator coolant recovery reservoir. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Does indicator light turn on and remain on? If yes, repair Light Blue wire between coolant reservoir and instrument cluster for short to ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Retest system. If no, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect connector C2 at instrument cluster. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance of Light Blue wire between instrument cluster connector C2 terminal No. 6 and coolant level switch connector. See Figure . Is resistance 5 ohms or less? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair Light Blue wire between instrument cluster and coolant reservoir for open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Reconnect system and retest.
  6. Using a jumper wire, connect terminals of low coolant level switch connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Does the indicator turn on then off after 3 seconds? If yes, replace radiator coolant recovery reservoir. Reconnect vehicle and retest system. If no, go to next step.
  7. With ohmmeter connected to a known good ground, measure resistance of Yellow/Red wire or Black wire at coolant level switch connector. Is resistance 5 ohms or less? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair Yellow/Red wire or Black wire between coolant level switch and ground for open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Retest system.
  8. Reconnect instrument cluster connectors. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using a voltmeter, check for voltage at instrument cluster connector C2 terminal No. 10 (Red/Yellow wire). See Figure . Is battery voltage present? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair Red/Yellow wire for open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Reconnect vehicle and retest system.
  9. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Using an ohmmeter, connected to a known good ground, connect second lead to instrument cluster connector C2 terminal No. 7 (Black/White wire), and then terminal No. 9 (Black/Yellow wire). See Figure . Is resistance 5 ohms or less for each test? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair Black/Yellow wire or Black/White wire between instrument cluster and ground for open. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Reconnect vehicle and retest system.
  10. Using an ohmmeter, check low coolant indicator bulb. Is low coolant indicator bulb okay? If yes, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See PRINTED CIRCUIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Reconnect vehicle and retest system. If no, replace low coolant bulb. Reconnect vehicle and retest system.
