Test Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1996 Mercury Mystique and 1996 Ford Contour. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

  1. Verify Condition

Turn ignition on. Check for fault codes. If Code 14 is flashing, go to step 2). If Code 14 is not flashing, check connectors, wiring, splices and crimps for an intermittent problem. DO NOT proceed with diagnostic test unless Code 14 is flashing. Failure to do so will result in unnecessary replacement of components.
  2. Isolate Shorted Circuit

Deactivate air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM  . Disconnect air bag diagnostic monitor. Disengage Red locking wedges from Gray harness connector. Measure resistance between terminal No. 3 of Gray diagnostic monitor connector and terminal No.s 2, 6, 17, and 18 of diagnostic monitor connector. If any measurements are not infinite, go to step 3). If all measurements are infinite, check Red locking wedge for proper operation, and proceed to CODE 51.
  3. Validate Primary Crash Sensor

Determine which primary crash sensor circuit is faulty. See Figure . Disconnect appropriate sensor. Measure resistance between sensor Black/Blue wire and Brown/Blue wire (right side sensor) or Black/Green wire and Brown wire (left sensor). If measured resistance is infinite, locate and repair short circuit in wiring harness for appropriate sensor and go to CODE 51  . If resistance is not infinite, replace affected crash sensor and go to CODE 51  .
