Test B: Set Speed Fluctuates
- Verify Symptom - Verify condition. Ensure engine is properly tuned. If condition occurs when cruise control is off, repair engine as required. If condition only occurs when cruise control is activated, go to next step.
- Check Servo Cable & Throttle Linkage For Binding - Check servo cable, throttle linkage, or throttle plate for binding or sticking. Ensure accelerator cable bracket and cruise control servo bracket are not loose. Repair as necessary. If no problems are found, go to next step.
- Checking Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) - Disconnect VSS connector, located at left rear of transmission. Measure resistance between VSS terminals. If resistance is not 1350-1650 ohms, replace VSS. If resistance is 1350-1650 ohms, check for open or short in circuit 8 (White/Purple wire) and/or circuit 31 (Black wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair as necessary and recheck system operation. If wiring is okay, go to next step.
- Check Servo Cable & Throttle Linkage For Binding - Substitute a known-good cruise control servo. Test drive vehicle and check for proper operation. If system is not okay, check MAP sensor and EGR valve for proper operation. See appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
