Turning Effort Check

NOTE: Ensure front wheels are properly aligned and tire pressures are correct before checking turning effort.
  1. Park vehicle on a dry, concrete surface and set parking brake. Run engine at idle for 2-3 minutes. Turn steering wheel to far left and right positions several times to warm fluid to 110-120°F (43-48°C). DO NOT  hold steering wheel in far left or right position.
  2. With engine running, attach a pull scale to steering wheel rim. Measure pull required to turn steering wheel one complete revolution in each direction. Effort required to turn steering wheel one complete revolution in each direction should be 29-39 INCH lbs. (3.3-4.4 N.m). If turning effort is not within specification, repair or replace power steering gear or pump as necessary.
