3.0L & 3.8L

  1. Ensure engine is at operating temperature. Turn all accessories off. Put shift selector in Park or Neutral position. Set parking brake. Vehicle front wheels must be in straight-ahead position. Connect timing light to engine. Locate and disconnect single in-line Spark Output (SPOUT) connector, located near ignition control module. See IGNITION CONTROL MODULE (ICM) LOCATION table.
  2. With engine at idle RPM, check ignition timing. See V6 BASE IGNITION TIMING table for specification. Turn engine off. Reconnect in-line SPOUT connector. Check computed ignition timing. Computed ignition timing should be advanced beyond base timing.

Application Location
2.5L, 3.0L (Except SHO) & 3.8L RWD (Except SC) On Distributor
3.0L SHO & 3.2L SHO On Upper Intake Manifold
3.8L Sable & Taurus On Right Front Radiator Support Bracket
3.8L SC On Pad At Right Front Of Engine
3.8L Continental On Firewall Behind Right Front Strut Tower
BASE IGNITION TIMING

Application Degrees BTDC @ Idle
2.5L (1) 9-11
3.0L Except SHO (2) 10
3.0L SHO & 3.2L SHO (2) 10
3.8L (2) 10
(1) With STI terminal of DLC grounded.
(2) Disconnect single in-line SPOUT connector or remove shorting bar from double-wire SPOUT connector.
