Section 59 (A/C-Heater System - Manual): Description

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1994 Mercury Grand Marquis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: To avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully follow all SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM procedures in AIR BAG article in ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT section.

Manual A/C-heater system is a fixed orifice tube, cycling clutch design, with an integral blower system. System components are a compressor, magnetic clutch, condenser, evaporator, accumulator-drier and connecting lines. Outside air is used except during MAX A/C operation. Evaporator/blower assembly is mounted on engine compartment side of firewall. Heater core with plenum chamber is mounted on passenger compartment side of firewall.

Refrigerant system incorporates a 10-cylinder compressor controlled by a clutch cycling pressure switch. Clutch cycling pressure switch is connected in series with compressor clutch. Clutch cycling pressure switch is used to prevent evaporator icing during normal system operation. Compressor will operate if ambient temperature is greater than 45°F (7°C) and mode selector is in MAX A/C, NORM A/C, DEF/FLR (MIX) or DEF position.
