Section 48 (Engine Controls - Tests W/O Codes - EEC-V (4.6L)): Introduction

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1994 Mercury Cougar and 1994 Ford Thunderbird. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Before diagnosing symptoms or intermittent faults, perform steps in BASIC TESTING - V8 article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. Also refer to TESTS W/CODES - EEC-V (4.6L) article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section and perform appropriate steps. Use these articles to diagnose driveability problems existing when a hard fault code is not present or vehicle is not equipped with a self-diagnostic system.

NOTE: Some driveability problems may have been corrected by manufacturer with a revised Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Check with manufacturer for latest PCM application.

Symptom checks can direct the technician to malfunctioning component(s) for further diagnosis. A symptom should lead to a specific component or system test and/or adjustment.

Use intermittent test procedures to locate driveability problems that DO NOT occur when the vehicle is being tested. These test procedures should also be used if a soft (intermittent) trouble code was present, but no problem was found during self-diagnostic testing.

NOTE: For specific testing procedures, refer to I - SYS/COMP TESTS article below in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. For specifications, see ADJUSTMENTS or SPECIFICATIONS articles in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section below.
