Description & Operation
The steering column assembly consists of a steering shaft, steering shaft tube, upper and lower bearings, mounting brackets, ignition lock, combination switch, and universal joints. The steering column and shaft are designed to collapse under heavy load. See Fig 1 .
CAUTION:
Aspire is equipped with Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). Observe safety precautions. The air bag system is powered directly from the battery and back-up power supply. Before any repairs are performed, disconnect and shield battery ground cable. Wait at least one minute before servicing any air bag component. Use caution when working near steering column. Air bag could accidentally deploy at any time.
