5.8L Valve Clearance Adjustment

NOTE: Hydraulic valve lifters are used; no valve adjustment is required. If valve clearance is incorrect, use oversize or undersize push rod to obtain correct clearance.
  1. Rotate crankshaft in normal operation direction until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke. Make chalk mark on vibration damper 180 degrees from TDC mark. Label this mark as position "2". Make another chalk mark 270 degrees clockwise from mark at position "2". Label this mark position "3".
  2. Using Lifter Bleed Down Wrench (T71P-6513-B), apply pressure to No. 1 intake valve lifter until lifter is completely bottomed. Hold valve lifter in this position while measuring clearance between valve lifter and valve stem. Record measurement. Repeat procedure for intake valves No. 4 and 8, and exhaust valves No. 1, 3 and 7.
  3. Rotate crankshaft 180 degrees to position "2". Bleed lifters and check intake valves No. 3 and 7, and exhaust valves No. 2 and 6.
  4. Rotate crankshaft 270 degrees to position "3". Bleed lifters and check intake valves No. 2, 5 and 6, and exhaust valves No. 4, 5 and 8. Record and compare measurements to specification. See 5.8L COLLAPSED VALVE LIFTER CLEARANCE table. If clearance is not within specification, install shorter or longer push rod to obtain correct clearance.
