WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1993 Ford F-Super Duty. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Ensure drive belt is in good condition and tension is properly adjusted. See POWER STEERING PUMP BELT  under ADJUSTMENTS. Repair any external leaks before continuing with pressure test. Disconnect pressure line from connector at pump. Connect Power Steering Analyzer (014-00230). See Fig 1 .
  2. Open shutoff valve fully. Start engine and purge air from system by turning steering wheel fully left and right several times. Turn engine off and check connections for leaks.
  3. Check for proper fluid level at reservoir and add or remove fluid as necessary. Start engine. Partially close shutoff valve and observe pressure gauge. If pressure gauge needle vibration is excessive, repeat step 2) to bleed air. Place thermometer into reservoir and connect tachometer to engine.
  4. Ensure shutoff valve is fully open. Place front wheels in straight-ahead position. Place transmission in Neutral position. Ensure parking brake is applied.
  5. Start engine and partially close shutoff valve until gauge indicates 800-1000 psi (56-70 kg/cm2 ). When temperature of power steering fluid reaches 120°F (49°C), open shutoff valve fully and turn engine off.
