Section 7 (Drive Axle - Front): Description

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1992 Ford Aerostar. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Aerostar 4WD front axle assembly uses 2 half-shafts and 2 inner axle shafts that are integral with differential assembly. The 2 outer half-shafts (consisting of 2 axle shafts with 4 Constant Velocity (CV) joints and dust boots) are bolted to inner axle shaft flanges. A CV joint is attached to both ends of each half-shaft. A fixed CV joint is used on outer end of each half-shaft. A plunging CV joint is used on inner end of each half-shaft. See Fig 1. Half-shafts are splined into inner CV joints and secured by snap rings. Half-shafts are fixed in non-serviceable outer CV joints.

Inner axle shafts are retained in axle housing by "C" clips in differential case. For additional information on inner axle shafts, see DRIVE AXLE - FRONT (DANA 28-2) article in the DRIVE AXLES Section.
