Clutch Assembly: Removal
- Remove battery and battery tray. Disconnect main fuse block. Disconnect coil wire from distributor. Disconnect electrical connector from airflow meter. Remove air cleaner assembly. On non-turbo models, remove resonance chamber and bracket.
- On turbo models, remove throttle body-to-intercooler air hose and air cleaner-to-turbocharger air hose. On all models, disconnect speedometer cable on analog instrument cluster or speedometer electrical harness on digital instrument cluster. Disconnect 2 ground wires from transaxle case. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels and splash shields.
- Drain transaxle fluid. Remove clutch release (slave) cylinder. Remove tie rod nuts and cotter pins. Disconnect tie rod ends. Remove stabilizer link assemblies. Remove bolts and nuts from lower control arm ball joints.
- Pull lower control arms down to separate them from the steering knuckles. Remove right joint shaft bracket. Remove half-shafts from transaxle by prying with a bar inserted between shaft and transaxle case. Install 2 Transaxle Plugs (T88C-7025-AH) between transaxle differential side gears.
- Remove gusset plate-to-transaxle bolts. Disconnect extension bar and control rod. Remove flywheel inspection cover. Remove starter motor and access brackets. Mount Engine Support Bar (D87L-6000-A) to support engine. Remove center transaxle mount, bracket and left mount. Disconnect right transaxle mount at vehicle frame.
- Remove crossmember and left lower control arm as an assembly. Position transmission jack under transaxle and secure transaxle to jack. Remove engine-to-transaxle bolts. Lower transaxle out of vehicle. If same pressure plate is to be installed, index mark pressure plate to flywheel. Loosen pressure plate attaching bolts evenly in a crisscross sequence. Remove pressure plate and clutch disc from flywheel.
- Remove transaxle pilot bearing from crankshaft. Remove release bearing and clutch release fork. Mount a dial indicator so tip of indicator is against outer clutch disc-to-flywheel contact surface of flywheel. Position pry bar between rear crankshaft flywheel mounting flange and engine block.
- Pry crankshaft fully rearward. With crankshaft still fully rearward, rotate crankshaft one complete revolution while noting variation of reading on dial indicator which indicates runout. See FWD FLYWHEEL SPECIFICATIONS table.
- If runout exceeds specification, use a crisscross sequence to loosen flywheel mounting bolts. See FWD FLYWHEEL SPECIFICATIONS
. Remove flywheel. Repeat runout reading procedure as in step 8), except place dial indicator tip against crankshaft rear flange face. If crankshaft rear flange is cause of excessive runout, resurface crankshaft flange face.FWD FLYWHEEL SPECIFICATIONS
