Radio Suppression Capacitor Testing

NOTE: This is an open or shorted circuit test and does not measure capacitance value.
  1. Remove and disassemble alternator. Set ohmmeter to 1000-ohm range. Connect one ohmmeter probe to terminal "B+" and other probe to rectifier base plate assembly. Reverse probes while observing ohmmeter needle.
  2. One position should give an infinite reading, indicating reverse current direction through diodes. Other position should read about 1000 ohms resistance, indicating forward direction of current. The same reading in both directions indicates inoperative rectifier assembly.
  3. To check capacitor, connect probes to rectifier assembly terminal "B+" and base plate. If needle jumps momentarily and then returns to previous position, capacitor is okay. If needle does not jump, replace rectifier assembly. Radio suppression capacitor must be replaced as a complete unit.
