Description & Operation

NOTE: Unless otherwise specified, references to "F" Series include "F" Series Super Duty.

The Motorcraft Integral Alternator/Regulator (IAR) uses a solid-state voltage regulator mounted to the rear housing. The charging system consists of an alternator/regulator assembly, charge indicator (light or gauge), battery and required circuitry. Charging systems are equipped with a fusible link, used to prevent system damage. Some models are equipped with indicator lights while others use voltmeters.

When the ignition is turned on, voltage is applied through the charge indicator "I" circuit to the voltage regulator. The voltage regulator is activated and allows current flow from the battery to the alternator through circuit "A". When the engine is started, the rotation of the alternator creates AC current which passes through the rectifier assembly and is converted to DC current. DC current is supplied to the vehicle's electrical system by the output terminal located on the rear housing.
