Low Oil Level Indicator

  1. With oil at "FULL" mark on dipstick, start engine. Warning light should come on briefly and then go out. Turn engine off. Drain 2 quarts of oil from engine. Wait 5 minutes and restart engine. Warning light should come on and stay on.
  2. If light does not come on, check bulb, circuit fuse, low oil level relay, or low oil level sensor. To test sensor, connect ohmmeter positive lead to sensor terminal and negative lead to engine ground.
  3. With sensor submerged in oil (engine full), meter should indicate an open circuit. With sensor out of oil (oil drained), resistance should be less than 1000 ohms. Engine oil must be hot to ensure that oil drains away from sensor.
