Standard Columns: Reassembly
- Turn ignition switch to "START" position to locate actuator interlock through clearance hole in outer tube. Install and tighten 2 cylinder housing-to-bracket bolts.
- Install new steel insulator clips on flats on steering column upper shaft. Lubricate lower 6" of steering column upper shaft with chassis lube.
- Assemble upper and lower shafts. Align index marks made during disassembly. Slide lower bearing, with sleeve, up into outer tube as far as possible. Use a length of pipe to seat bearing retaining ring against bearing.
- Pin punch steering column upper shaft serration diameter to ensure an interference fit between bearing inner race and steering column upper shaft. Slide upper bearing and insulator as far as possible down shaft.
- Place a 3.25" (82.5 mm) length of 3/4" (19 mm) diameter pipe over end of shaft. Install steering wheel nut and tighten until bearing is fully seated. Remove steering wheel nut and pipe and install bearing snap ring.
- Install upper bearing retainer plate. Install column shrouds, turn signal and wiper/washer switches. Install steering column in vehicle.
