Electric Choke
- Remove and plug all vacuum hoses to air bypass valve for catalyst overheating protection. Start engine and bring to normal operating temperature. Remove the air cleaner and plug all vacuum lines. Disconnect and plug vacuum line to EGR Valve.
- Verify that solenoid and electric choke wires are properly connected. Check all carburetor linkages for freedom of movement. Manually depress the throttle lever to 1/4 open position and rotate the choke plate to the closed position.
- Release the choke plate. It should rotate smoothly to the open position. If not, correct as necessary to restore freedom of choke plate operation.
- Disconnect the choke electrical lead. With engine running, place a test lamp in series with the lead and the choke cap. If lamp does not glow, check for voltage at the electrical lead or proper choke cap ground.
- Choke cap is grounded by a strap on the bottom of the cap. If electrical circuit is good, but lamp still does not glow, replace choke cap.
- Turn engine off. Set the fast adjustment screw on the highest step of the fast idle cam. Cool the choke housing externally until the choke plate seats in the air horn.
- Start the engine and set the fast idle adjustment on kickdown by depressing the throttle once. The choke should open fully in 4 minutes maximum. If the choke does not open in specified time, replace choke cap.
