Purging System

NOTE: Air trapped in power steering system, which causes a whine or moan noise, can be removed by using a power steering pump air evacuator tool. To fabricate an air evacuation tool, a vacuum pump capable of drawing 15 in. Hg. is required. Rotunda (021-00014) can be used if tool cannot be fabricated.

Carefully remove pump filler cap. Check and fill reservoir to "COLD" mark. disconnect ignition coil lead and raise front wheels off of ground.
Crank engine, while turning wheels from stop-to-stop. Add fluid if necessary. Reconnect coil lead and install evacuation tool into reservoir.
Start engine and supply 15 in. Hg (Maximum) on reservoir for a minimum of 3 minutes with engine idling. As air purges from system, vacuum with vacuum source.
Release vacuum and check fluid level. Start engine and turn wheel from stop to stop every 30 seconds for 5 minutes. DO NOT hold wheel on stops. Maintain adequate vacuum as air purges. Remove tool, recheck fluid level. Lower vehicle and road test.
