REFERENCE

CONDITION & CAUSE
For all subject vehicles, a new design Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) has been released. The new TPS eliminates a false Self Test Code 53. A Code 53 means the TPS system has failed at the wide open throttle position (approximately 5.0 volts). By limiting the wide open throttle voltage to 4.75 volts the new TPS eliminates false Code 53. With the new TPS, Code 53 will only result from a TPS malfunction or circuit.
REPAIR
On 1985 vehicles, the new throttle position sensors can be used to replace faulty sensors. A false Code 53 may result if the old design service part is used.
