Test P - Shift Indicator Light (SIL)

NOTE: Before proceeding with this test, all recorded fault codes must be serviced. Code 11 must be present for both Key On-Engine Off and Engine Running Self-Tests.
  1. Road test vehicle and verify faulty shift indicator light. If light always off, go to next step. If light not always off, go to step 4).
  2. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect harness at top gear switch and inspect. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, measure resistance of switch harness from self-test output circuit to self-test connector. If less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit, reconnect harness at switch and road test vehicle.
  3. Turn ignition off and disconnect harness at top gear switch. With DVOM on 200 ohm scale, place transmission in 1st gear and measure resistance of switch. If less than 5 ohms, check fuse and bulb. If okay, service open circuit between shift indicator light and ignition switch. Reconnect switch and road test vehicle. If 5 ohms or more, replace switch and road test vehicle.
  4. Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect harness at top gear switch and inspect. With DVOM on 200,000 ohm scale, place transmission in top gear and measure resistance of switch. If less than 10,000 ohms, replace switch and road test vehicle.
