Tilt Columns: Disassembly
- Remove steering wheel, column shrouds, turn signal and wiper/washer switches. Remove steering column from vehicle. Remove the conical coil spring and upper bearing plate.
- Remove the upper bearing C-clip. Move the tilt casting to the upper position to unload the tilt spring. Use tool (T67P-3D739-C) to remove the pivot pins. Lift off the tilt casting.
- Tilt casting bearings may be removed with a drift punch. Using a screwdriver, pry out the lower bearing retainer and discard it.
- Pull the lower end of the shaft assembly downward through the tube until the lower bearing/sleeve with lower shaft clears the lower end of the tube. Slide the lower bearing/sleeve off of the steering shaft.
- Pull the steering shaft assembly out of the outer tube from the bottom of the tube. Scribe a mark on the upper steering shaft where the upper and lower steering shaft sections form a joint line.
- Also scribe marks on the upper and lower shafts to indicate shaft relationship. Separate upper and lower steering shaft sections. Remove and discard the insulator clips.
- Remove 2 bolts connecting lock cylinder housing to outer tube flange bracket. Rotate ignition key to "START" position, and pull actuator interlock out of clearance hole in tube.
