Tilt Columns: Disassembly

  1. Remove steering wheel, column shrouds, turn signal and wiper/washer switches. Remove steering column from vehicle. Remove the conical coil spring and upper bearing plate.
  2. Remove the upper bearing C-clip. Move the tilt casting to the upper position to unload the tilt spring. Use tool (T67P-3D739-C) to remove the pivot pins. Lift off the tilt casting.
  3. Tilt casting bearings may be removed with a drift punch. Using a screwdriver, pry out the lower bearing retainer and discard it.
  4. Pull the lower end of the shaft assembly downward through the tube until the lower bearing/sleeve with lower shaft clears the lower end of the tube. Slide the lower bearing/sleeve off of the steering shaft.
  5. Pull the steering shaft assembly out of the outer tube from the bottom of the tube. Scribe a mark on the upper steering shaft where the upper and lower steering shaft sections form a joint line.
  6. Also scribe marks on the upper and lower shafts to indicate shaft relationship. Separate upper and lower steering shaft sections. Remove and discard the insulator clips.
  7. Remove 2 bolts connecting lock cylinder housing to outer tube flange bracket. Rotate ignition key to "START" position, and pull actuator interlock out of clearance hole in tube.
