Test J - Code 41/Fuel Mixture
- Verify that vehicle was running more than 2 minutes immediately before testing. If not, prepare vehicle and repeat Quick Test. If so, proceed with test.
- Check that EGO sensor lead is connected. Check EGO sensor ground for proper connection and absence of corrosion. If any problems are found, repair as necessary and repeat Quick Test. Otherwise, proceed with test.
- Disconnect EGO sensor lead. Connect a DVOM between EGO sensor lead and ground. Perform Engine Running Test and monitor EGO sensor voltage for 14 seconds after start. If voltage reading is .45 volts or more, EGO sensor is ok, proceed to step 14). If voltage reading is less than .45 volts, reconnect EGO sensor and proceed with test.
- Connect EGO sensor. Disconnect thermactor air supply hose at the air pump and cap the hose to the manifold. Perform Engine Running Test. Check for code 41. If code 41 is not present, problem is not in EEC system. If code 41 is present, leave thermactor disconnected and proceed with test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect FBC solenoid connector. Start engine and perform Engine Running Test. Check for code 41. If code 41 is not present, proceed to step 8). If code 41 is present, leave FBC solenoid disconnected and proceed with test.
- Run vehicle for 2 minutes at part throttle. After vehicle warm-up, hold choke plate 3/4 closed and perform Engine Running Test. Check for code 41. If code 41 is not present, fault is not in the EEC system, hook-up all disconnected parts and check fuel system for trouble. If code 41 is present, proceed with test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect grounded jumper wire from self-test connector. Start engine. Alternate between 30 seconds of idle operation and 5 seconds of part-throttle operation for 3 minutes. Check engine idle quality. If engine idles rough or poorly, connect all disconnected components and check fuel system for trouble. If engine idles normally, proceed to step 10).
- Turn ignition off and wait for 10 seconds. Measure resistance from each FBC solenoid terminal to ground. If either resistance is less than 1,000 ohms, replace FBC solenoid and repeat Quick Test. If both resistances are 1,000 ohms or more, proceed with test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect processor and inspect both 60 pin connectors. Connect breakout box to harness. Leave processor disconnected. With ignition on, connect voltmeter negative lead to harness circuit 97 and positive lead to battery positive post. If voltage is more than 2 volts, repair harness short in circuit 97 and repeat Quick Test. If voltage is 2 volts or less, replace processor and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect EGO sensor connector. Measure resistance between harness circuit 94 and ground. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or less, proceed to step 11). If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, proceed to step 12).
- Turn ignition off and wait for 10 seconds. Disconnect 60-pin processor connector. Inspect for damaged pins, corrosion, frayed wires and pins pushed out. Correct as necessary. Measure resistance between harness circuit 94 and ground. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or less, repair short circuit, connect all disconnected components, and repeat Quick Test. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, replace processor, reconnect all disconnected components, and repeat Quick Test.
- Turn ignition on. Connect voltmeter positive lead to circuit 94 and negative lead to ground. Measure voltage. If voltage is 2 volts or more, repair harness short and repeat Quick Test. If voltage is less than 2 volts, proceed with test.
- Start vehicle and run for 2 minutes. Using DVOM measure voltage between EGO sensor lead and ground. Hold choke plate 3/4 closed while observing voltage. If voltage is less than .45 volts, replace EGO sensor and repeat Quick Test. If voltage is .45 volts or more, proceed with test.
- Turn ignition off and wait 10 seconds. Disconnect processor and inspect both 60 pin connectors. Connect breakout box to harness. Leave processor disconnected. Measure resistance from breakout box pin 29 to circuit 94 and from breakout box pin 49 to pin 40 or 60. If either resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair faulty circuits and repeat Quick Test. If both resistances are less than 5 ohms, replace processor and repeat Quick Test.
