Description And Operation: Description: Notes
A power operated door lock system is standard equipment on this vehicle. The power lock system allows all doors to be locked or unlocked electrically. Locking or unlocking the vehicle using the power lock system can be accomplished by two different methods:
- Power Lock System - Operating a power lock system switch on either front door inside trim panel will lock or unlock the latches of all doors.
- Remote Keyless Entry System - Depressing the Lock or Unlock button of the standard equipment Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) system transmitter can also be used to lock or the front and side doors. A third button is added for rear cargo doors on cargo and glazed door vans.
Additional details of each of these subsystems and their components can be found in the subheadings and paragraphs that follow.
The electric door locks are controlled by the Body Control Module (BCM). This locks and unlocks the doors on the basis of two control types: external and internal.
- External controls
- The external door locking/unlocking commands can arrive from the following components:
- Closing/opening buttons on Remote Frequency (RF) remote controls of keys
- Key cylinder on driver door handle
- Passive Entry System
The BCM receives the RF signals from the locking/unlocking buttons on the remote controls via an aerial. The movement of the key cylinder on the driver door handle is detected by a switch connected electrically to the BCM.
- Internal Controls
- The internal door locking/unlocking commands can arrive from the following components:
- Buttons on driver door panel.
- Buttons on passenger door panel.
- Car speed above 20 km/h (speed information for BCM via CAN).
- Door unlock request from FPS (Fire Prevention System).
CENTRAL LOCKING - The simultaneous operation of the door locks takes place via:
- the remote control
- the key inserted in the pawl on the driver's door;
- the locking/unlocking button in the controls of the two front doors.
The remote control unit has 3 buttons that allow control of the central locking system: a button for unlocking the doors, one for locking and one for releasing the liftgate.
The door unlocking/locking management strategy is carried out by the BCM which controls the effective status of the locks by means of the signals that arrive from the switches in the locks themselves: in this way, the locking command is only carried out if the doors are properly shut and the locks unlocked; conversely, the unlocking command is only carried out if the locks are locked.
The instrument panel acquires the door status signal via the CAN and switches on the "doors open" warning light and, at the same time, the information is shown on the display; in addition, if one of the doors is open and the speed of the vehicle exceeds around 4 km/h, an acoustic warning is also emitted.
The "Setup Menu" in the instrument panel can be used to activate or exclude the Autoclose function, i.e. automatic central locking whilst the vehicle is moving. This function allows the automatic locking of the doors to be activated when the speed exceeds 20 km/h.
All the door locking motors are protected by a dedicated fuse in the BCM.
LIFTGATE OPENING - The boot opening geared motor is operated by:
- the remote control (when the dedicated button is pressed twice in quick succession, only the luggage compartment opens up)
- the button at the base of the tailgate. The same button can also be used to lock the tailgate when the latter is closed.
The instrument panel acquires the door status signal via the CAN and lights the "doors open" warning light and, at the same time, the specific "luggage compartment open" information is shown on the display; in addition, if one of the doors is open and the speed of the vehicle exceeds around 4 km/h, an acoustic warning is also emitted.
The "Setup Menu" in the instrument panel can be used to activate or exclude the Autoclose function, i.e. automatic central locking whilst the vehicle is moving. This function allows the automatic locking of the doors and the boot to be activated when the speed exceeds 20 km/h.
The liftgate locking/unlocking circuit is protected by a specific fuse, located in the BCM.
PASSIVE ENTRY
On some versions, in place of the conventional mechanical key, an electronic key (Keyless Enter-N-Go) is adopted, with "Passive Entry" car access control. The ignition device (START/STOP button) has the following possible states:
To activate the ignition device, the electronic key must be inside the passenger compartment.
The ignition device does NOT activate if the electronic key is inside the rear cargo area and this is open.
With engine started, it is possible to go away from the vehicle taking the electronic key with you. The engine will still be running. The vehicle will indicate the absence of the key on board when the door is closed.
- STOP: engine off, steering column locked. Some electrical devices (e.g. central door locking system, alarm, etc.) are still available;
- ON: driving position. All electrical devices are available. This state can be entered by pressing the ignition device button once, without pressing the brake pedal (versions with automatic transmission) or the clutch pedal (versions with manual gearbox);
- ACC: engine starting.
The "Passive Entry" system can identify the presence of an electronic key near the doors and the tailgate. The system enables the doors (or the tailgate) to be locked/released without pressing any button on the electronic key. If the system identifies that the electronic key detected outside the vehicle is valid, the owner of the key can simply grasp one of the front handles to deactivate the alarm and unlock the door and tailgate opening mechanism.
Using the instrument panel "Setup Menu", it is possible to unlock the driver's side door only or all doors. To lock the doors, when you have the electronic key with you, just press the "door locking" button on the handle: this will lock all doors and the tailgate. The vehicle doors and tailgate can in any case be locked by pressing the button on the electronic key or on the inner door panel.
The Passive Entry system comprises the following components:
- Passive Entry control unit;
- Key identification aerials;
- Door locking switches located in the outer part of the front door handles.
The Passive Entry control unit is located in the tailgate trim; to locate the key and determine whether it is located inside or outside of the car, the control unit uses 5 antennas located at strategic points of the car itself: on the dashboard, at the back of the roof, in the rear door panels and in the rear fascia.
