Description And Operation: Operation

The components are the same as those in the EPS on the steering column, but the position of each one is different.

The reduction gear and the EPS motor are located on the rack side of the dual-pinion EPS. The EPS motor is integrated into the EPS control module, giving a compact and lightweight unit. The torque sensor installed on the pinion shaft detects the steering force and direction from the torsion bar's torsional moment, and transmits the signal to the EPS control module.

When operating the steering wheel, the force (torque) applied to it turns the torsion bar. The torsion bar's rotation is detected by the torque sensor as a torque signal, which is then sent to the EPS control module.

The EPS control module calculates the optimal servo-assistance force based on the torque signal, the vehicle speed received from the PCM and the engine speed signal, and then supplies the drive current to the EPS motor. The force transmitted by the EPS motor is multiplied by the reduction gear and transferred to the servo-assistance pinion. The rotational torque (servo-assistance torque) of the pinion and the rotational torque (steering torque) of the pinion on the steering wheel side are transmitted to the rack, causing the wheels to change direction.
