Clutch Slippage
PRELIMINARY CHECKS EVERYTHING OK PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED RESOLUTION Perform a road test that includes hills and city driving with frequent gear changes and 4-5 standing starts to heat the clutch and engine. Evaluate the abnormality in the following operating conditions:
- With vehicle speed constant in third or fourth gear, perform a rapid acceleration of the engine with the accelerator pedal fully depressed.
- Perform standing start with gradual acceleration from 1000/1500 rpm.
Perform a standing start in fourth gear gradually releasing the clutch pedal and check if the vehicle does not move and the engine does not stall.Verify customer concern. Clutch slippage. Continue to Step 2. CHECK CLUTCH PEDAL EVERYTHING OK PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED RESOLUTION Check that the clutch pedal moves freely with no unusual effort or binding when released. Continue to step 3. Sticking or binding clutch pedal. Replace the pedal Refer to PEDAL AND PAD, CLUTCH, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION . CHECK LEVER AND BEARING PRESSURE PLATE EVERYTHING OK PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED RESOLUTION Check that the release bearing moves freely in its housing and shows no signs of damage.
Check that the release bearing contact with the pressure plate is centered and even.Continue to step 4. - The presence of dirt or wear due to insufficient lubrication does not allow the release bearing to move freely.
- Release bearing not contacting the pressure plate properly.
- Replace components as necessary.
- Replace components as necessary.
CHECK THE MASTER CYLINDER (CHANGE STACCATO EVERYTHING OK PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED RESOLUTION With the clutch slave cylinder on the bench, apply pressure (compressed air) and check the stroke of the tip (the test reflects what has been done in the car). NOTE:This test is used to verify that the fault is within the clutch slave cylinder and not the plumbing or the master cylinder.
Continue to step 5. Slave cylinder malfunction. Replace the slave cylinder. INSPECT CLUTCH EVERYTHING OK PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED RESOLUTION Visually check the condition of the clutch assembly for damage or signs of severe overheating on the pressure plate, deterioration of the disc and the presence of grease or oil on the friction surfaces. Continue to step 6. - Notable deterioration of the clutch disc or rupture of the pressure plate.
- Presence of oil or grease on the disc.
- Damper springs weak or broken.
- Breakage at the base of the support segments of the friction material of the clutch disc.
- Replace the clutch disc and pressure plate.
- Replace the clutch disc.
- Replace the necessary components.
- Replace the clutch disc.
INSPECT CLUTCH DISC SPLINED HUB EVERYTHING OK PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED RESOLUTION Verify in order:
- That there is no excess of grease on the splines of the clutch disc hub and of the input shaft.
- Integrity of the hub and shaft.Continue to step 7. - Excess grease on the splines.
- Input shaft damaged, hub worn.
- Clean excess grease, repair the source of the grease.
- Replace the hub and/or the input shaft.
CHECK CONDITION OF THE FLYWHEEL EVERYTHING OK PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED RESOLUTION Check the condition of the flywheel. In particular, check:
- Surface condition.
- Wear.
- Etchings.
- Presence grease / oil on the surface of the disc.
- Signs of overheating.End diagnosis. - Flywheel damaged.
- Presence of dust of the friction ring by the flywheel.
- Replace the flywheel.
- Remove dust from the flywheel friction surface.
