Shaft, Intermediate: Installation: Installation
CAUTION:
Steering column module is centered to the vehicles steering system. Failure to keep the system and steering column module centered and locked/inhibited from rotating can result in steering column module damage.
NOTE:
When removing and installing the column to service the intermediate shaft, it is not necessary to remove the steering wheel and Steering Column Control Module; the column can be removed and installed as an assembly.
NOTE:
A new pinch bolt (1) is required every time the intermediate shaft is serviced.
- Slide intermediate shaft (2) onto splines of steering column assembly.
- Install NEW coupler pinch bolt (1) and tighten to 28 N.m (21 ft. lbs.)
- Verify the front wheels of vehicle are in the STRAIGHT-AHEAD position.
- Slide the intermediate shaft (2) onto the steering gear pinion shaft (4).NOTE:
A new pinch bolt (3) must be installed every time the pinch bolt is removed.
- Install a NEW pinch bolt (3). Tighten the bolt to 55 N.m (40 ft. lbs.) and then remove the position locking sleeve or cut the tie strap.
- Install knee blocker, if equipped Refer to AIR BAG, KNEE BLOCKER, INSTALLATION .
