Shaft, Intermediate: Installation: Installation

CAUTION:

Steering column module is centered to the vehicles steering system. Failure to keep the system and steering column module centered and locked/inhibited from rotating can result in steering column module damage.

NOTE:

When removing and installing the column to service the intermediate shaft, it is not necessary to remove the steering wheel and Steering Column Control Module; the column can be removed and installed as an assembly.

NOTE:

A new pinch bolt (1) is required every time the intermediate shaft is serviced.

Slide intermediate shaft (2) onto splines of steering column assembly.
Install NEW coupler pinch bolt (1) and tighten to 28 N.m (21 ft. lbs.)

Verify the front wheels of vehicle are in the STRAIGHT-AHEAD position.
Slide the intermediate shaft (2) onto the steering gear pinion shaft (4).
NOTE:
A new pinch bolt (3) must be installed every time the pinch bolt is removed.
Install a NEW pinch bolt (3). Tighten the bolt to 55 N.m (40 ft. lbs.) and then remove the position locking sleeve or cut the tie strap.
Install knee blocker, if equipped Refer to AIR BAG, KNEE BLOCKER, INSTALLATION .
