Inspection Procedure No. 54 - Checking For Clogging

  1. Note location of EVAP canister. On FWD models, EVAP canister is located in the fuel tank. On AWD models, EVAP canister is located at driver's side front corner of engine compartment, near headlight assembly.
  2. Disconnect vapor hose at the EVAP canister that goes back to the fuel vent valve (AWD models) or liquid separator (FWD models) on the fuel tank filler tube assembly. See Fig 1 . FWD models may also be referred to as 2WD models.

  3. Using vacuum pump, apply vacuum on disconnected vapor hose. If vacuum cannot be obtained, go to step 7). If vacuum can be obtained, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect vapor hose at fuel vent valve (AWD models) or liquid separator (FWD models) on the fuel tank filler tube assembly that goes back to the EVAP canister. Using vacuum pump, apply vacuum on disconnected vapor hose. If vacuum cannot be obtained, go to next step. If vacuum can be obtained, repair clogged vapor hose between EVAP canister and fuel vent valve (AWD models) or liquid separator (FWD models).
  5. Check fuel tank filler tube assembly. See SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS - TURBO article. If fuel tank filler tube assembly operates correctly, go to next step. If fuel tank filler tube assembly does not operate correctly, replace fuel tank filler tube assembly.
  6. On AWD models, repair clogged vapor hose between fuel vent valve and fuel cut-off valve. See Fig 1 . On FWD models, repair clogged vapor hose between fuel tank filler tube assembly and fuel cut-off valve, and between liquid separator and leveling valve. See Fig 1 .
  7. Disconnect purge hose at the EVAP canister that goes back to the EVAP purge solenoid. EVAP purge solenoid is located on intake manifold. See Fig 2 .

  8. Connect vacuum pump to disconnected purge hose. Note location of purge hose that goes from EVAP purge solenoid back to the EVAP canister. Purge hose is connected to pipe that goes over air intake plenum and back to EVAP canister. Disconnect purge hose at the pipe over air intake plenum.
  9. Using vacuum pump, apply vacuum on disconnected purge hose. If vacuum cannot be obtained, replace EVAP canister. If vacuum can be obtained, repair clogged purge hose and pipe between EVAP canister and EVAP purge solenoid.
